Radiance of Night

I am one of those crazy people who will set their alarm for 3:30am for the chance to witness something rare and beautiful.

That doesn’t always turn out for me, but on this occasion the noctilucent clouds radiating throughout the sky left me speechless. I now understood why they are called “night-shining clouds”.

Noctilucent clouds are actually ice crystals that form on dust particles from meteors in the mesosphere, up to 80km above the Earth’s surface. They may be visible between the end of May and the start of August every year at northern latitudes but only under very specific conditions.

Because they are so high up, noctilucent clouds are illuminated by the sun long after it has set or before it rises. These ethereal clouds appear as electric blue-white swirls, curls and tendrils shining and shimmering in the sky.
