Peaks and Edges

Adventures off the beaten path, or across jagged peaks of ice heaves, take a little more effort, but the discoveries of interesting shapes, structures and textures are so worth it.

Not all frozen lakes in the Rockies provide for similar experiences, but the uniqueness of Abraham Lake, Canada is worth the exploration.

As Abraham Lake is a reservoir, the water levels are dropped in the early winter causing sheets of ice to develop along its sloped banks.

Equipped with micro-spikes, I explored the rugged, slippery terrain of these ice heaves. I soon realized that sitting on a jagged edge of ice was the easiest way to capture interesting photos while watching the sun set behind the beautiful mountain peaks.

We typically think about sitting on a sandy beach to watch a sunset, but sitting on a thick, smooth, crystal clear block of ice is uniquely memorable!
