Frosted Love
To me, winter is a beautiful season in which to create photographs. The gorgeous light from the low angle of the sun, the sparkle and texture of snow and ice, the minimalism of a fresh blanket of snow, and a little bit of warmth from the sun on my face…
On this particular day, millions of light, delicate and almost ethereal frost flowers covered the surface of the freshly frozen wild ice of Bow Lake, in Banff National Park.
For these “flowers” to form, the temperature of the water below a layer of ice needs to be warmer than the air above. When this occurs, the ice has a chance to vaporize and, once it hits the ultra-cold temperatures above, turn into a frozen, flower-like structures. The combined shape of the sun halo, clouds and mountain reflection completed this scene for me.
I need more frost flowers in my life!
